Zero Waste Natural Deodorant Score

Refillable zero waste natural deodorant stick in close up with packaging behind it on a wood table outdoors.
It’s refillable natural deodorant that really works. Genius!

When it comes to natural deodorant, I’m kind of a slut. I’ve tried most brands on shelves, gave away a bunch and even developed a natural deodorant DIY! Realizing that potentially cancer-causing ingredients were in most deodorants — and that natural alternatives are competitively priced and readily available — set me on the natural beauty path in 2008. Because no one wants to put that crap next to your lymph nodes, especially now that breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women in their late 30s to early 50s — roughly the ages that I’ve been since I began writing as Mommy Greenest. (P.S. Just clicked through these links and watched myself age. Wow.)

Essential Oil Natural Deodorant DIY Recipe

Have you tried plastic free natural deodorant? Now even mainstream natural deodorant brands are touting aluminum- and paraben-free — for good reason, as there is no excuse for putting toxic chemicals near vulnerable areas like lymph nodes and breasts. But most natural deodorants still aren’t taking on the plastic problem, and most are made with baking soda, which gives me a painful rash under my arms. (No. Fun.) Recently, I’ve been experimenting with essential oil natural deodorant blends and let me tell you: In the right combination they really WORK!

Mommy Greenest Approved: Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant

jars of natural deodorant against a white backgroundWith the temperature and sweat factor rising, it’s time to break out the big guns. But not antiperspirant! Those are typically chock full of toxic chemicals that some scientists believe are linked to breast cancer, not to mention parabens and phthalates, which mess up your hormones. I had been curious about Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant ever since I read the rave reviews: Everyone from Alicia Silverstone to my friend Sophie Uliano of Gorgeously Green claimed it keeps you drier than other natural deodorants. But could Schmidt’s really keep up with 100-degree weather? I planned on finding out—especially since I had just hooked up my Mommy Greenest friends (read: you) with a chance to win one of five free jars, plus 15% off. [Read more…]

Natural Deodorant Secret to Daily Dryness + DIY

model using natural deodorantFor a long time, I used natural deodorants every day, but for a big meeting or a hot date, I couldn’t risk soaking through my sleeves.

Because let’s face it: Natural deodorants simply do not work as well as antiperspirants at controlling wetness. To do that, you have to block pores with a coating of potentially carcinogenic chemicals.

But I soon learned that there’s a secret (pun intended) to using natural deodorant to control odor. Want to know more? Read on! [Read more…]

Go Put On Your (Natural Beauty) Face!

woman holding makeup brushes with children's drawings behind her“I’m just going to go put on my face.” How many times did you hear your grandmother say that? For me it, was too many to count. And it always confused me because honestly my grandmother didn’t look that different before and after. But as I grow older, I get it. Today, it takes a little work to achieve the “natural” glow that I used to have without any makeup at all. And even though no one probably even notices, I feel better when I have my natural beauty face on. It takes me literally five minutes. I use five natural beauty products. And there’s not a toxic chemical in the bunch. Here’s how.

3 Steps to Natural Beauty

red-haired model in drugstore aisle looking at a labelGot a minute? Take a look at your bathroom shelves. If you’re like most women, you’re using about 12 different beauty products each day.

Now flip to the ingredients panel of your favorite product—a lotion, perhaps, or sunscreen—and settle in for a good read. Do the ingredients number a dozen or more? Probably. Can you pronounce them? Probably not.

Yet those 12 beauty products deliver an average 168 potentially toxic ingredients to your body each and every day.  [Read more…]
